Last December 28th was the Comiket 75 — the world’s largest comic convention, held in the Tokyo Big Sight venue every year. As you can imagine, tons (half a million actually) of otakus, cosplayers, media, and doujin circles. Lots of pictures for you too!

    What is the Comiket?

Comiket or コミケット, short for Comic Market, is the largest comic convention, held two times every year in Tokyo, Japan, to promote and sell 同人 (dōjin independent) work, usually manga, novels, and video games.

Crowded Comiket Tokyo Big SightAs you can expect, this year’s Comiket was quite crowded and you had to arrive early to get in!

The first Comiket was held in 1975, with about 32 dōjin cirlces and 600 attendees. Fast-forward to 32 years later, the Comiket now has more than 35′000 circles and 550′000 attendees!

Unfortunately, it’s been a while since I watched animé, so I hardly recognize anyone Y_Y. If you know where the cosplayers are from, please comment below, or via my Twitter (thanks!).

Comiket cosplayers are more willing to pose, compared to those in Shinjuku and especially in Akihabara, where you have to take paparazzi pictures of cosplayers hiding their faces (from their parents maybe?).

Now famous authors that started as dōjinshi include Clamp (from Card Captor Sakura), Ken Akamatsu (Love Hina), and Rumiko Takahashi (Ranma, Inuyasha). Pretty cool huh?

Besides cute bunny gals, you’ll find tons of kakkoii-looking guys who get all the aahhs and ooohs from girls around them (jealous jealous).

Besides finding lots of really cool dōjin manga, you can find lots of independent games too! As an independent game developer, I hope I can get our game on the next Comiket. Well who knows! I’ll let you know how it goes :) I’ll be posting more pictures and cosplayers from the Comiket so don’t forget to subscribe via RSS or via email! The saddest part is when you have to go home.  そろそろ帰ろうか?《≡^O^》
