The “Kuroshio Sea” tank in the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is the second largest in the world and houses 21,000 animals. The tank holds about 7.5 million liters (or almost 2 million gallons). Enough words, take a look at this video, definitely breathtaking (watch in HD!)

Yesterday the Embassy of Japan gave a small speech about the Scholarship to Japan which has been the latest topic around here ^^

Half of the participants there are applying for the undergraduate scholarship, with only three seats available for all Central America I think. Nobody from Costa Rica has ever won this scholarship, since there are many topics not covered by our general education. Take a look at the past exams (chemistry, physics, math, etc.) Math is okay except for calculus (our school did have calculus though), but to tell the truth I would flunk on the other ones. It’s kind of saddening to hear the staff from the embassy say that you shouldn’t have high hopes (or any at all), but it’s the right thing to do. I mean, when you *do* have a chance it’s okay, but seriously no school here graduates students from high school with a level close to that one. I guess here’s when you see the difference between high school around here and in Japan ^^ math is pretty okay though, which is surprising.

Here’s a sample question from the Biology test (remember that this is undergraduate, you should know this by high school), I chose an “easy” one:

The final product of glycolysis in respiration, which is incorporated into the TCA cycle

A. glucose        B. PGA         C. Pyruvic acid         D. PEP         E. RuBP       F. xanthophyll

As for the postgraduate scholarship, Costa Rica and most countries have three seats available, which is quite nice considering that about 50-70 people apply I think. As for the selection, to my experience students from public universities on “prestigious” careers are usually better seen than those from private universities. Computer Engineering is also one of the best choices not only around here but worldwide, which also gives me some advantage ^^;

Besides meeting my rival, I also saw some known faces, and lots of other people who show many signs of not getting the scholarship. Not to sound rude but people that talk the most are usually the ones who have less to show off — of course, exceptions do exist. Anyway, decided to have something to eat with my rival and I explained him some aspects about the scholarship, and also let him know that I speak some Japanese, which should alert him into making a bigger effort. In the end, I think I couldn’t be the bad guy and we had a nice time, I explained everything he wanted to know. Maybe it’s because I think I have better credentials, or maybe because we’re friends ^^. Anyway, I didn’t tell him much about all the stuff I’m going to show off at the interview, but did tell him to be prepared. We’ll be meeting again the day of the interview, and a few weeks later we’ll know who has been selected. Even if I’m not chosen I would be happy if he is, but to tell the truth it would be great if we could both go — still think it’s highly probable.

Weird ginormous fish spotted somewhere in Yokohama. Any fishologists around here who know how this one tastes? ^^

Which reminds me, more small changes on my website: if you click on the small pink arrow on the top-right corner on the header next to the RSS Subscribe button, the header will fold. Settings are saved on your computer so if you’re a Instant Ramen fan (pun intended) you may customize it as you see fit ^^ my Acer Aspire One’s horizontal resolution is a bit small, so this helps a lot and maximizes space usage. More layout upgrades will be coming to your nearest Instant Ramen soon! (Mr. Fish contribution by Osk)

Update: Michael Flux says it’s a “red lionfish” (pterois volitans) ^^ thanks!
