Spotted this image via Neta. Since the image is incomplete, I don’t exactly understand what this means, except for the (supposedly) obvious part of a 17-year-old adding up 2 kilos of muscle ^^;

The reason I decided to write about this topic is because most Asians have small torsos and weak-looking physiques, me included being a Chinese half. Actually, I can’t spot many differences, only that his new self is smiling! The funny part is that for Western standards, this guy went from way too skinny to too skinny. The guy is 177 cm tall, a tad taller than me and weighs 62 kilos after adding up muscle with our unknown miracle muscle builder product ^^;

Anyway, my lowest weight since I was 18 was 55 kilos, I was really skinny by that time, but sudden changes in my life made me go up to 70 kilos when I went to Japan, my all-time new record. After that, I started weightlifting and my life took a drastic change. As you can imagine, at 70 kg I was quite chubby (at least compared to how I was before), but still, my friends usually told me that they preferred the new Hao rather than the old one — I really was way too skinny. So I decided to give up my weak-like looking figure and after lifting some heavy weights, one year later I maxed at 78 kg, most people who heard that I was going up thought I was really fat, but it was great seeing that OMG face and then telling me that I had bigger arms, wider shoulders, and so on ^^.

Anyway, that phase is known as bulking, though I’m not so hardcore. Basically you don’t give a flying F about losing the fat that you already have and go ahead and add as much muscle as you can, by becoming heavier and of course, stronger. After you’re tired of bulking (that’s me a couple of months ago), you start a cutting phase, where you lose weight slowly, losing fat and trying to maintain the muscle that you already have by eating very healthy (I know, my blog’s name is not ideal for that ^^). I am now 74 kg, and will probably go back to my original 70 kg just-arrived-in-Japan self :) This time though, I’m hoping there will be a huge difference in my physique. Strength and health-wise I already proved to myself that I made the impossible possible by lifting more than 250 pounds. And after that, probably will slowly gain weight and strength and go for the 80 kg mark — it’s really fun and exciting, especially since I’ve been training a few friends and they’re all rooting for me (and sometimes being skeptic, which is a great challenge and motivation).

I have tons of progress pics and most show a drastic change, however, it’s been a while since I’ve been lean (meaning low body fat percentage). I’m now on my road to becoming lean and maybe will post some pictures from the last three years, you’ll be amazed at how my weight has been loco loco. For now, it’s not ganbare, it’s gaman shite kure! :(

Any experiences regarding weight and exercise that you would like to share with us?

Spotted these cute ikewomen on Kiyomizudera, Kyoto, and my friend Erick decided to take a picture with them. If you go to Japan, you’ll be committing a sin if you don’t go to Kyoto, I mean, look at those girls! ^^ Seriously, it’s packed with temples and sightseeing that will leave you wanting much more.

Also, if you’re in Japan, don’t be shy to ask a couple of girls or cute guys to take a picture with you (or without you if you’ll ruin the picture) — most will be incredibly willing to, instead of going paparazzi-like taking pictures of them. Just say anything, in fact, if you’re able to speak Japanese (anything as simple as “Shasshin wo totte iin desuka?”) they’ll probably go “heeee uso! Nihongo meccha umai!!” and so on, and will definitely take a picture with you. As a bonus you’ll be able to practice your Nihongo, too :) Remember, people are born friendly.

We also took pictures with cute schoolgirls in Kyoto, will upload next time. It was quite a lot of fun!!

Most of you are familiar with Utada Hikaru (宇多田 ヒカル), born in 1983, New York.
Most of you are familiar with Utada Hikaru (宇多田 ヒカル), born in 1983, New York. Fluent in both English and Japanese, she’s that cute face who caught us J-Pop fans by surprise on 1999 with her Debut album First Love, which is an all-time number one seller in Japan (I love this version). Well, guess what, besides being an incredibly kawaii girl, she’s also a Tetris otaku who wears geek glasses and will humilliate you in a Tetris match (yes video).

J-Pop Star

Utada Hikaru is, with no doubt, Japan’s most succesful pop star. 3 out of 10 top best-selling albums in Japan are from Hikki as her fans call her. Besides First Love, I’m also a big fan of Flavor of Life (live version), the 2007 best-seller in Japan.

Where’s the Tetris part?

When someone told me that Utada Hikaru probably owned me at Tetris (I’m really good at puzzle games, including on my own one!) I literally rolled on the floor laughing my ass off. Well, a video is worth a thousand words:

Click here to view the embedded video.

Anyway, at the beginning, she says that she’s not used to the controls and losses a few matches. Actually, Tetris rules have constantly evolved since the day Alexey Pajitnov created this masterpiece, so the button layout can get a little messy on the DS version.

超かたい！超かたい！(#%$@! this controls!!)

Well, after losing a couple of rounds Miss Utada finally gets a grip on the controls, and you’ll see that the geek behind the glasses is actually a die-hard Tetris otaku! She ends up with a respectable 26 win – 4 loss streak. よっしゃ～！is what she says after indiscriminately owning guys, gals, kids, and the Nintendo Staff themselves. Check out these two videos [1] and [2] if you’re into Utada Hikaru playing Tetris ^^

めっちゃくちゃかわいい～！

Seriously though, she is a monster Tetris maniac and fortunately I didn’t get the chance to get humilliated on TV (BTW, if you have Tetris DS let’s share Friend Codes, I love a good Tetris match!). Well, enough geekness, let’s get back to the J-pop star we love!

Did you see that coming? I certainly didn’t. Only in Japan I guess! Anyway, if you enjoyed today’s post, don’t forget to subscribe to our RSS feed, lots of tasty ramen guaranteed! Which Utada Hikaru do you prefer, J-Pop or Otaku?
