Yesterday the Embassy of Japan gave a small speech about the Scholarship to Japan which has been the latest topic around here ^^
Half of the participants there are applying for the undergraduate scholarship, with only three seats available for all Central America I think. Nobody from Costa Rica has ever won this scholarship, since there are many topics not covered by our general education. Take a look at the past exams (chemistry, physics, math, etc.) Math is okay except for calculus (our school did have calculus though), but to tell the truth I would flunk on the other ones. It’s kind of saddening to hear the staff from the embassy say that you shouldn’t have high hopes (or any at all), but it’s the right thing to do. I mean, when you *do* have a chance it’s okay, but seriously no school here graduates students from high school with a level close to that one. I guess here’s when you see the difference between high school around here and in Japan ^^ math is pretty okay though, which is surprising.
Here’s a sample question from the Biology test (remember that this is undergraduate, you should know this by high school), I chose an “easy” one:
The final product of glycolysis in respiration, which is incorporated into the TCA cycle
A. glucose B. PGA C. Pyruvic acid D. PEP E. RuBP F. xanthophyll

I’m very pleased to announce the new Author here at Instant Ramen: Alejandra Quirós, aka Rei*. She is currently studying for a Doctorate’s Degree and researching on Computational Vision (kakkoi! ^^) at Tsukuba University in Japan thanks to the MEXT scholarship that I’m currently applying.
Here are some words from Rei* herself about her role around here:
Hi everyone! I’m happy to be an author here at Instant Ramen and will hopefully bring you lots of photos and articles about known and unknown Japan! Hope I share some of my experience with everyone around here — readers, passersby, or J-bloggers. Yoroshiku ne!

Alejandra was also in charge of some programming for Wind and Water: Puzzle Battles including many key parts — security, encryption, and website backend programming. She’s been traveling here and there in Japan and knows some key aspects on studying, how to live, how to rent appartments, and many other tips about Japan.
Her newly purchased hardware is a Canon Kiss X2 and her first J-picture will remain one of my favorites — takoyaki:

Dericious! Not only did she take the picture, she also made the takoyaki (yes, convincing her into writing a “How to make takoyaki” picture guide soon! ^^)
Hope you enjoy her posts and give some stir to my usual topics around here! =) If anyone would like to see something in particular from her point of view be sure to ring some bells! Oh, and don’t forget to add _alechan to Twitter!

Weird ginormous fish spotted somewhere in Yokohama. Any fishologists around here who know how this one tastes? ^^
Which reminds me, more small changes on my website: if you click on the small pink arrow on the top-right corner on the header next to the RSS Subscribe button, the header will fold. Settings are saved on your computer so if you’re a Instant Ramen fan (pun intended) you may customize it as you see fit ^^ my Acer Aspire One‘s horizontal resolution is a bit small, so this helps a lot and maximizes space usage. More layout upgrades will be coming to your nearest Instant Ramen soon! (Mr. Fish contribution by Osk)
Update: Michael Flux says it’s a “red lionfish” (pterois volitans) ^^ thanks!

“The best gift for mother’s day!” little girl cooking gone wrong ^^;
What’s the first thing that comes to your mind with you see this picture? It’s not like I see something (completely) weird but ten years ago, this picture would have had absolutely no misinterpretation. Special thanks to globalization doing its best (and Pedobear)! Original caption at Neta reads something like “After this we can go cook on the bed” >_<
Things like this didn’t happen in the 90′s (am I getting old?)

Sushi

Sushi brought to you by Hao ^^; dunno if it’s legal to call it sushi as any Japanese would kill me if they knew I’ve been messing with their food >_<
Today I received some very good news, the video-game that we published some months ago — Wind and Water: Puzzle Battles / 時空五行風水大戦 — was featured at gamesTM, a huge UK-based magazine and I had a chance to look at it today. Really neat and professional.

Random Scramble Crossing at Shinjuku.
For those who don’t know, last time I wrote about my decision about applying for the Postgraduate Degree MEXT Scholarship (Mongukagakushou) to study in Japan, particularly to Tokyo University (東大), the most prestigious University in Japan.
The idea of going to the Embassy was to select a specific field of study and the three Universities of choice, however, for some reason or another, the person in charge told me that private universities were very expensive and so I should refrain from writing them down. However, I’ve seen people apply and get accepted at Keio, Waseda, etc., without problems. Greatswifty is at Waseda and applied for the exact same scholarship.
